Reflections

As ten weeks of Technical communication lesson is over, I spend some time over the week reflecting about the module.  Even though ten weeks is insufficient for me, assignments are given to me like the formal report, the product summary and the report writing allows me to learn the importance of writing. The product presentation give me a chance to improve on my presentation skills and at the same time understand the importance of a good presentation.

During the lessons, I got a chance to interact with my lecturer and my coursemates in different class activities. I get to understand different people’s working style and it benefited me in my other modules project as I can communicate well with them. The activity on introduction to presentation is fun yet challenging as the class is given only 20 minutes to understand three webpages of data and then present it the groups that we are in. This trains me to do speed reading and to note down the important points for presentation.

At the end of this module, I found out I am still weak in my language as I still make countless of grammatical errors but thankfully my lecturer has been constantly correcting me. Which motivates me. He said something which I will never forget. To be a good billiard player, play more billiard. To improve on my English, i will have to write and read more. After this module I am going to write and read more during my free time.

Product Description Summary/ Analysis draft 3

                                                                           GPS Insight

The article “GPS Insight Can Meet ‘Out-of-The-Box’ Requirements” introduces the functionality, features, and benefits of GPS Insight, which primarily provides “asset and vehicle tracking solutions”. The main function of GPS Insight is to retrieve and relay back data collected to the user for analysis in real time. The article also states the features of GPS Insight as “configurable and customizable” according to the user’s requirements and preferences. Users could set alert and report to add only selected vehicles, to incorporate specific type of landmarks and user centered versus vehicle centered results.  To be able to meet user’s ever-changing demands and requests, GPS Insight introduces new features based on user’s response and feedback. Due to GPS Insight’s customizability, it can perform at different degrees of comprehensiveness, making it a versatile product.

GPS Insight meets ‘Out-of-The-Box’ requirements in several ways. It is designed to be real time so that the user gets updated fast.   It is also convenient as it sends data such as stops and route, and or either through e-mail or SMS to the user.    It can perform at different degrees of comprehensiveness like the GPS Insight dashboard, which can be changed and saved to fit the user’s constant changing demands and requests. It also provides a two-way communication among users.

Another similar product Discrete wireless uses GPS to collect productivity and utilization information. Besides reducing the costs incurred by fuel usage and cost, waiting time for the next destination data to arrive causing the vehicle to wait is also reduced as data is collected GPS insight however doesn’t offer any warranty which makes Discrete wireless stands out of the similarity they have in common accessible devices making it very convenient for them. Also, this product allows a two-way communication between users and those in the office.

Discrete wireless MARCUS Guard is a warranty plan that is valid for three years on the vehicle GPS hardware device, which makes Discrete wireless stands out from GPS insight in its similarities in function. GPS is a sophisticated product that could malfunction due to its excessive usage. Without a warranty plan, users will be spending a lot of money try to fix the problem on the devices even though it’s new.

All these characteristics seem to demonstrate that GPS insight would have been a good product like Discrete wireless if they have a warranty plan to help users in troubleshooting the product if it’s faulty.  Product tied up with warranty would give customer greater assurance, in the case where their product is in deflect condition.

Does GPS Insight meet ‘Out-of-The-Box’ requirements? It does to a large extend as GPS insight are designed to collect data fast and conveniently for users to access.  Due to the world growing rapidly, GPS Insight collect data real time that users could be updated in an instant. It can perform at different degrees of comprehensiveness to meet the user’s constant changing demands and requests.

In an article on "The Evolution of Telematics" (Lauren Fletcher& Grace Suizo,
February 2011). The usage of GPS in their product MARCUS Fleet Tracking solution (Lauren Fletcher & Grace Suizo, February 2011) collect productivity and utilization information. Besides reducing the costs incurred by fuel usage and cost, it also shortens the time frame when the vehicle is stationary. Keeping up with the technology trend, Users can access from either their computer, smartphone or any web accessible devices. Which will keep users constantly updated at a desired speed with the results they wanted.

One of the example this product could do is to be able to notify users by sending e-mails on a constant basis for important things.  The waiting time and the speed of the vehicle. The MARCUS Speed Limit (Lauren Fletcher& Grace Suizo,
February 2011), a real-time notifying function alerts the manager of the product and the user when the vehicle exceeds the speed limit when cruising along the expressway.

There maybe other products that wasnt mention here uses GPS in another creative way, but all of them serves the same purpose which is to make things convenient and to conform to the lifestyle users are living.

Formal Email Writting

To: Brad Blackstone
From: Boris Khoo
Date: 21 September 2016

Subject: Introduction of Myself and My Educational Goals and Aims

Dear Brad,

I am Boris Khoo from the telematics class of TLM1010. I am writing this email to introduce myself and to explain to you about my educational background, my interests, my goals for studying Telematics and my aims for the future.

Usually when I introduce myself, people would ask me : "Are you a russian"? "Why do you have russian name as your first name?".  My reply to them is that I don't look like a russian and I am not a  russian. I have a russian name because my parents wanted a unique name for me. Therefore they decided to name me after someone great who's name is Boris Yasin. One of the Russia's president after the cold war ended.

During my free time I would go for a jog around the park, play sports like tennis and dodgeball and also trying out new programming software that is available online. I really enjoy sports as it really bonds people together.

I previously studied electronic and computer engineering in Ngee Ann Polytechnic, specialised in computer mobile technology. That’s where I found my interest in programming.  Since then I have done a lot of programming related to the Android platform.

The reason why I joined the telematics course is to find out more about the current transportation network, driverless cars and how programming could be used in making transportation better. Also I want to find out about what is people’s views on the current transportation. So far I find this course challenging. I was expected to understand the steps to a problem rather than remembering the solution.  I aim to make transportation more user friendly by using my skills that I will be imparted with.

I hope you would get to know me better after reading this short introduction.

Yours sincerely,

Boris Khoo
